why can I not I go back to an earlier restore point?

It only works when going back to a point earlier in the day. If I want to go to an automatic point, say Sept 1st after an hour It always gets stuck on initializing

I only have one drive with system restore but for

If System Restore is failing, try rebooting, pressing F8 just at the end of the Power On Self Test, then choosing Repair Your Computer from the menu that comes up. Then follow the prompts and choose System Restore. It's more likely to complete from a clean bootup like this than from a running system.

How do I do that with windows 8?
