Are we talking DOS games here, or what?

A lot of my older games require explorer to be turned off in order to be played, specfically the 1st 2 AOEs and all the X-wing titles.

one week before i was able to play every game on my computer.but on sunday while i was playing wizard101 my computer automatically turned off.when i tried to turn it on it turned on normally but it started displaying machine language....0101.....the next day i turned it on...now windows started normally and when tried to play a game on it wouldn't start even wizard101 not started

report back with exactly what happens when you try to run the games: eroor message? BSOD? Blank screen? unresponsive system?
