Why cant i access my external hard drive

Hello,
when trying to access my WD external HDD I keep getting an error message stating request could not be performed due to an I/O error'.
It works correctly on separate machines, except mine. It has not worked since recently installing windows 8.
Can anyone help?

Have you checked that your computer supports Windows 8 (in other words, does your PC manufacturer have Windows 8 drivers for your model on their website?
