Why cant i connect to internet using lan saying you dont have valid ip

when i connect my laptop with lan cable , it gives me the error displaying you lan doesn't have valid ip address??
what should i do diagnose these???

Do other devices work on that same cable? If you do an ipconfig /all command at a command prompt what do you get for the settings?
