Hey guys, for some reason I can't overclock my 4790k, it just says that the recent overclocking setting failed and that it was switch back to the default values. Can some please let me know how to fix this. I think I need to upgrade my motherboard to a z97 one, but I'm not sure.
Specs:
Cpu: I7-4790k with Hyper 212 Evo
Gpu: EVGA ACX 2.0 FTW 970
Ram: 16gb of Corsair vengence clocked at 1600
Storage: 250gb samage 850 evo ssd(boot device), and 1tb Seagate barracuda 7200rpm
Mobo: MSI Z87-G45
Power Supply: Corsair RM1000x 80+ gold
OS: Windows 10

Solution
No offense, but you seem to be clueless on how to overclock.
Open bios
Reset to factory defaults
Reboot
Open bios again
Set multiplier to 46
Set voltage to 1.3v(manual)
Reset and see what happens
WATCH CAREFULLY for cpu temp(use coretemp)

Report back.

when you mean set the multiplier to 46 do you mean clock it to 4.6 because my default on my mobo is 4.0 x 100

I'm trying to run it at 4.6, but it won't work Im only changing the multiplier on the motherboard I just tried to increase the voltage but that didn't work either

Yes. Usually this is the reasonable limit with 4790k. Especially with your budget cooling and limited experience.
