Why cool the chipset?

I was just wondering, why would you want to cool the chipset? Does it make the computer faster?

Because it dissipates a lot of heat and you ahve to or you'll start getting crashes.

It's for stability. Just as an overclocked CPU needs more cooling so does the northbridge if FSB is overclocked.

I was thinking of buying a water cooler. Would it be worth getting a block for the chipset? I'm getting one for the cpu of course and probably the video card.

I've never done any watercooling myself. My feeling is that if you are watercooling the CPU amd GPU then you will be removing a considerable amount of heat from your system. Less system heat means the northbridge will be cooler already. You might not need to watercool it. You don't need to watercool the southbridge (if your mobo has one).

Depends how far you overclock, with most P4 boards anything over 250FSB is going to require good northbridge cooling.

I have a P4 2.4 system 533Mhz and an athlon xp 2500 system. Which one has more overclocking potential. I'd already brought the 2500 up to 3200 speed but it was too hot and I had to bring it down. I've never OCed a P4 before, so I thought maybe someone who has, could tell me how well it OCed.
