Why did my wd 320 hard drive split in two one small 8m drive?

Just go ahead and fdisk and format the drive to your needs,either from a floppy or a usb drive..

If you install Windows XP or the older Windows os with a bare no partitions hard drive it creates this small partition for system use during the install. As mentioned if you are bothered by this hidden partition just use a partition tool creating an ACTIVE partition then install will not need the small partition and will not form one. It really don't
hurt anything. I might as well mention Windows 7 does the same thing but it builds a 100Mb partition.
