Why do I have an extra unknown character in my Windows username?

I just installed a fresh new copy of Windows 7 64-bit, and for some reason, an extra character founds its way into my username and now its causing all kinds of problems.

Error while trying to install Java Developer Kit:

And this is how Chrome sees my path to Desktop:

Is there a way to fix this or do I have to reinstall the operating system again from scratch?

Solution

Save all the relevant data (Docs/Music/etc) to a non-User account folder
Delete, create new account
Copy the data back

I was more concerned with configuration, as I did a lot of tweaking since I installed and though it's not a serious problem, it's annoying to do it all from scratch.
