Why do I have to be online to play Amalur?

Kingdoms of Amalur has been a very enjoyable game for the most part; I'm roughly 45 hours into it. My question is: Why do I have to be connected to Origin online to play this single player game? I can't even start the game in offline mode because, I guess, my save files have to be retrieved from Origin? So far, I've been prevented twice from playing the game I paid for because of problems with the server. What am I doing wrong?

You can open up origin, click the button next to '?' button, and click go offline. That way you won't have to be online to play .
