I have watched the news forum, and I have selected the option to receive alerts when a new thread is posted to the forum, but yet, I never get the alert when a new thread is created, I only get alerts when someone replies to a news thread I have already watched.

I did change the setting so that I get notified when there are new messages to the news forum, which lets me know when someone replies to a news thread, but it still doesn't do what I want which is to be notified whenever a new thread is posted to the news forum.

Maybe you get so many your spam filter on your email client has stopped showing them?
I’m not talking emails. I’m talking about alerts. I’m saying it doesn’t give me an alert that a new thread was posted to the news forum like it does for every other forum I’ve opted to watch.

For the moment, as I understand the problem, you only get notified when someone posts to a news alert that you are watching.

No alerts/notifications when the news alert was originally posted. Which is your requirement/desire. Correct?

I do not see any notification option that specifically pushes a notification when a new thread is posted in the news forum. Only when someone posts to that new thread.

Speaking for only myself (and no offense intended) I do not want to be notified everytime there is a new posting within the News Forum.

I simply scan for postings that appear of interest to me.

there is an option to receive an alert every time a new thread is posted to the news forum, I think.

i understand that, but for myself, I end up missing a lot of discussions on articles that interest me, and by the time I discover them, they’ve either already been closed or are old. It is especially annoying when threads are bound to get closed quickly. (political or otherwise)

This:

"there is an option to receive an alert every time a new thread is posted to the news forum, I think"

I am not seeing any options to explicitly do that.

Check in News feed - one of the options there may be viable. E.g.:

Your news feed is currently empty.
Follow people to fill it.

Otherwise, barring some error of omission or commission on my part, the question/issue will need to escalated in search of the "how to".

Overall though I am in agreement with @Colif - Very likely that you will be overwhelmed with notifications....

Prioritize (always a good skill) your interests and relevant discussion topics.

Besides, if a thread gets closed that quickly it is very unlikely that you will miss much with respect to the topic at hand.

It’s the same options when you click the option to watch any other forum. There’s always the option to get notified when a thread is posted to any forum, not just the news forum.

Fair enough.

i just wish there was a way to customize notifications so you could receive them based on keywords in titles. (Eg getting notified anytime a news thread with “ryzen” in the title was posted) you are probably right, though. Is there any way to only receive notifications based on whether the thread is a question or discussion?

Not that I am aware of - but again, I configure to minimize notifications and rarely to do any filtering for specific topics.

Do you have a search box in the upper left screen corner? If so and if you click in that search box you should see a pink oval "Advanced".

There are some search options therein. No notifications though.

Yes, but I don’t see any way to only search for discussion thread. I tried using the tag search and searching for threads with the discussion tag, but there was only one result, in wireless networking that used the discussion tag.

Are we looking in the right place. How the alerts are handled in Watched forums is controlled here
https://forums.tomshardware.com/watched/forums
it lists all the forums you are watching and the settings for each. I get an alert anytime anyone posts a new thread in this forum, for instance.

you click the square next to the forum name and bottom choices let you set what you want for forum

If you have it set for alerts in News and you still don't get them all, I guess forums could get overwhelmed with responses or its just broken. Either is possible.

That makes sense considering you’re a mod, and this is the forum rules and feedback forum after all.

I’m still not getting them, but I’m going to double check.
