Why do newer mobos have less USB ports?

All but the very cheapest of boards have at least six rear panel USB ports. As above, some are USB 3.0.

Eight to ten happens on more expensive boards, but it's unusual.

Most modern boards also support four front panel USB 2.0 ports, and two USB 3.0 ports. Chances are that your parents' build only supports 4-6 USB 2.0 ports.

USB support doesn't seem to have massively moved.
All my ATX boards have at least 6 USB ports and most of them are high speed USB 3.0 ports.

A single USB 3.0 port has has significantly more bandwidth than any 2.0 port (bandwidth of usb is shared between all ports on the board).

I wouldnt use number of USB ports as a benchmark.


Most people will have something like this

Keyboard and Mouse (wireless dongle
Webcam or headset
Printer
USB cable for mobile device
External harddrive

That is 5 ports used. Most board probably have 6-8 ports on the rear and 2-3 on the front. Expansion cards are cheep and so are USB docks. If you need more powers than that you probably A) have too many things or B) already have a USB dock to handle your needs.

The chipset only supports so many USB ports meaning if you want to add more the motherboard manufacturer needs to install a 3rd party controller.. most of which usually suck.

 
I think I remember seeing like I think 8 USB ports on my parents mobo(Not currently in front of it), and I am looking for a budget mobo for my parents with an i3-6100, which I just kinda randomly picked it because they don't game but I am pretty sure an i3 has hyper-threading, which has better multi-tasking? I just need a mobo that is cheap and has an adequate amount of USB ports.
