I've seen videos of people with their PC's with overkill liquid cooling on their system. My question is, what is the actual point? Standard coolers do the same job, and it just seems to be a real waste of money regardless of overclocking or not.

I'm not talking about coolers like the H100i, i'm talking about the systems with liquid pipes and pumps all over.

Reason 1 to water cool, if you have the money and wish to do it.
Reason 2 to water cool, if your running a high-end enough PC to need to water cool to keep the temps down.
For your average user with a single high-end video card and a overclocking processor their really no reason to unless you are trying to squeak the last bit of overclock out of your parts. Even with overclocking you get to a point of diminishing returns so it's really what you wish to do.
I'm not scared of water leaks if you do it right their no problems, the same with maintenance if you set your system up right you can drain, flush, and refill in about 30/45 minutes one time a year so that's not bad at all.
The bad thing about water is if your pump goes out your PC is...

I just replaced my aging H100 with a R1 air cooler and dropped my Prime 95 temps by 12C WT# on that?

Why buy a pair of $10 headphones when you can buy some Dr Dre Beats for $200?

I hope someone actually gets this...

The components used in Beats headphones actually only adds up to somewhere in the neighborhood of $15. Besides, in all tests I have seen of Beats headphones, they aren't very good. You can spend $100-$150 on some great headphones, if you do your homework. With Beats, you're just paying for the brand name. This isn't even the same comparison, so I don't 'get' your metaphor because the components used on good watercooling pumps and components actually are much better than those in closed loop coolers, so you actually are getting more for your money.
