Lot's of pro players play with 1600x800 on Counter Strike, Cod4...etc and with a odd aspect ratio? Why do they do this? I heard it makes fov 65+ but I'm not sure.

uhhhh, I'm not 100% sure but the only reason I can think of why people would do that is to increase their in game fps also I read somewhere that it makes your chances of missing a shot much smaller for example if you have a 800x600 resolution the players body will be 15 pixels and 5 for the head (something like that) and theirs a total of 480,000 on the screen. So the chances are more likely compared to a 1680x1050 or 1920x1080 res. But personally I think its just they don't have the best computers because they are too busy playing the game soo much and have bad PC's so they end up running games at low resolutions to keep their fps high and smooth. Hope ive helped!

maybe its a personal preference, or depends on the game, I'm currently playing dota 2, and switching from my 20" 900p monitor to a 23" 1080p TV doesnt make any difference in my playing, the 1080p looks better though. Higher resolution requires more dpi on your gaming mice also 😀

I don't think it's because they had bad pcs for example NiP (CS GO players) Play like that

yep, with all the money they earned in tournaments and endorsements, they always have the money to upgrade their pc, or even get a new one, its their bread and butter, so why not spend for it? 😀

For tournaments I imagine they don't even have to lug their own machines, probably set up by whoever is hosting the event, powerful enough to ensure an 80+ FPS at all times. Peripherals are no doubt provided by whoever is paying the most to have their logo on the team vest.

I remember some argument from a while ago that they lower settings that dont pertain to clarity, so particle effects and texture detail are reduced to make it easier to quickly recognize something and not be obscured by graphics, while Anti-Aliasing and Draw Distance is maxed out. Why they would lower the resolution I dont know, though the FOV is certainly one reason I can think of.
Though from there you have to wonder why they dont just get larger resolution monitors and increase the FOV manually.

Sometimes graphics is a disadvantage in competitive games, in dota 2, if you set the detail to max, and you have a team fight, when almost of the players are throwing spells, the graphics is awesome and sometimes you cant even see or notice where is your hero or if its still alive or what, so maybe thats one of the reasons.

^ That has definitely happened to me, get a particularly magic-y team composition and there are so many particle effects and animations that you can completely lose track of where your hero is.

Then again, I was playing Leshrac in one of those teamfights, couldn't see anything and I somehow got a rampage from my Ult and W going off in the middle of it all.
Maybe if they could see they would have smashed the guy just pumping out magic damage

yep very true, i was playing puck the other night with necro and enigma, im the initiator, so ill be the one to go in a team fight using my 1st skill, but as soon as i ended up throwing all my skills, i just phase shift haha coz the animations are really making me blind, dunno whom to hit haha.. the bkb effects also are so blinding in my eyes, cant recognize who popped that bkb because of the shinning effect. 😀

Puck Out!
He is a fun hero to play, actually had a Puck game just today. Phase Shifting once you get your combo off is probably the best move, unless your loaded with utility items your pretty much useless after the combo since your right-click isn't that great.

I still have to get used to the keybinds for Puck, so many times I have orbed into a bunch of them then immediately Phase Shifted instead of Waning Rift. Why the keybind to throw and tele to your Orb are different (and on either side of Waning Rift, so your jumping keys here) I have no idea.

OT:
well puck and invoker are my two fave heroes, my item build on that game was a dagger, dagon5, threads, bloodstone (my puck owned them lol 18/4/25 haha!) , puck is not an item dependent hero, a dagon5 after your combo should do it, if you could get a shivas guard after the combo and the dagon, thats great, her base damage should do the rest, its really annoying to fight against this hero..

back to the topic, hmm i wonder how the dota 2 pros set their resolution, im saw that they used large monitors probably 1080p's by benq during the TI3 and starladder..

maybe to avoid double tapping mistakes.

I;m using the QWERT keys bro, coz i didnt played the fist dota that much 😀

add:

its also a known fact that playing on a smaller monitor (ie 20") over a larger monitor (24" or larger) helps out in terms of reaction time. since everything is within your central vision you can see and react much faster due to more limited eye movement.

the benefit of a larger screen is that everything appears bigger and easier to see (and hit). likely they adjust the settings to a low resolution to get the best of both worlds.

edit:

@iceclock

more fps really only matters if you are using a 120hz panel as anything over 60 doesnt really matter if you use a 60hz panel.

keeping in mind that pro-gamers are not using junk computers (and they can surely handle 1080p at 60fps +) i think that this isnt the major reason for the switch.

basically what it comes down to is that so called pro players resort to any little gimmick they can to give themselves an edge (honestly its almost borderline cheating at times).

i used to be very good myself in the fps games i used to play (tfc, ut, avp, halo) but always played at max graphics at 1600x1200 (and now 1920x1080) without much trouble and without resorting to gimmicks. while i wouldnt consider myself "pro" (i find it funny how people can claim to be a pro gamer) i certainly was in the top 10% based on matches i played. of course since i dont play much anymore i likely will get owned since i'm way out of practice. using a large 40" tv as a screen doesnt help either (since its not within central vision).

Bro believe me, they dont need to lower the resolution to get more fps, the computers that are being used in tournaments are above the average gaming pc's, they wont host a contest with a slow pc that will affect the players performance.. i mean, these are pro's, they should give them the best pc's.. so it not the fps..
