Why do SanDisk SSD's come in such odd sizes, such as 480 instead of 512? That is a difference of 32gb.

Thanks in advance & have a great day!!!

I don't know it's kind of weird. Possibly because of the file system that's on the usb is taking up the space? but yeah, I have a 16gb usb, and it says its 14 instead. its weird, see if you can do some research and come to an answer, i might do it

SSDs, HDDs and other storage devices are quoted in GB when manufacturers count 1MB = 1000KB but windows count it as 1MB = 1024KB and that together with loosing some space while formatting can show quite different numbers. So 160GB drive actually has 111GB when formatted.
SSDs, beside those things also reserve one part for it's own use for Garbage Collection and Load leveling and extending their life and preserving speed.

I was aware that formatting took up space. In the case of a 512Gb drive after formatting(NTFS), I end up with 465Gb left, which is a difference of 47Gb,,, If I'm calculating correctly?:sarcastic: Since I can't seem to get a definitive answer anywhere, I'm assuming that they're using about 15Gb for over provisioning.

If I'm wrong about all this, will someone please correct me? Thanks allot for your reply, CountMark.

There could also be some difference as to what chips they use in different models, 3D chips are coming in more often now.
Logical and physical partitioning are also even more different than on HDDs. The way blocks, cells etc. used so all of that can screw up the math.
