Why does everyone get a 1TB+ HDD?

I plan on getting a 500GB for my upcoming build, but everywhere I look everyone seems to be buying 1TB disks. Why is that, is 500GB not enough these days (for gaming), or do people just like to spend money?

1) May Payne 3 is 30GB. Battlefield 3 is 15GB. GTA 4 is 17GB. Standard console ports are 9GB.

2) 1080p rips are 8GB for a 90min film

3) 720p rips are 5GB for a 90min film

4) I won't even start with porn.

5) Voila! Time for a new 3TB.

Generally the price/GB goes down the larger the drive you buy, and since having too much space is less of a problem than having too little people tend to err on the side of too much. If you are on a tight budget and making the jump to a 1TB+ drive will break the bank then 500GB is plenty for modern gaming.

I find 1080p and 720p rips to be overly high quality unless watching on a 36"+ monitor, the compressed 700MB rips do tend to be distracting to watch depending on the exact film and settings the ripper used, but 1.34GB rips are very acceptable even on 17"-30" displays.

And following your size scale, presuming you have the specific games listed plus 5 council ports, 20 1080p rips, and 50 720p rips you are at 517GB, plus 20GB for windows and 10GB in music, and 5GB in documents, 5GB in photos, you are still at 567GB...are you suggesting that you have 2.25TB of porn? :lol:

If you don't need the space, don't buy it. A lot of people do.

I've got about 4TB total storage right now, and it's not enough. Later this year I'm planning to build a 10TB NAS, which will probably last me all of two or three years until I fill it up and need to put even bigger disks in it.

In many cases these larger drives are also faster due to the platter density. Not always, but many times.

If 500 gigs is more then enough for you. Then you have NO reason to go much bigger, but some of the 1TB(even 2) drives use 1TB platters(1 or 2 or even 3 for a 3TB drive) and can be partitioned down to 500 gigs(or less) giving better access times.

Hmm I see. Thing is, I'm spending a lot of money on a gaming PC, but to be honest there are only a small group of games I actually enjoy, like the GTA games and maybe something like Battlefield. I'm not really sure here, but thanks for these views because it really has helped.

Can't think who to give the best answer to, either the person who's reply happened to make me laugh the most, or willard for OCing to 5.25Ghz.
