But it does notice the same drives with Linux installs. A number of different thumb drives have been tried, all with legit Windows 11 install software. BIOS is latest update, with default settings.

Well, sorry, but as I appreciate the help, indeed, doing that made no difference to my mainboard. The bios setup shows the usb drive as being present but continues to say that nothing is there. The usb drive is certainly there with the windows 11 install ready to go. But nothing boots or is 'seen'. Pffft.

I have a new board being shipped, and that seems like all I can do right now.

What about Uefi mode BIOS and TPM enabled ?

Yes, both enabled, not the difference in this case. Hmm, but again, thank you for trying to help! I will check the wiring just for fun but I doubt it. I could have messed up a circuit somewhere on the board. Weird things can happen. Though I've been at this since the days of Apple IIe.

I've collected more of those things, even finding them in old jackets ready for the wash. I got a smaller Asus board, as basic as one can get, and am putting that in now. As long as my back can bear it. Yeah, I have many various usb drives, from the older 8gb up to newer 256gb. I even remember the 2gb scsi hard drive I paid $500 for our BSD Unix server around 1996. And I never figured I would be alive for this long. :)
Thank you all!
