Question Why does my 1080TI throttle GPU down after 30 seconds of game?

I have a problem with my GPU throtteling.

I run a game with nice and high FPS for 30-50 seconds GPU running about 100%.

Then I get a studder and the GPU throttles down to about 70-75% and stabalizes. It never goes up to 100% again unless I restart the game. And the whole thing repeats. I cant crank out the awesome FPS because I cant make the GPU run at 100% or close - always throttles down to the 70ies.

I cannot find anything on what is going on.

My temperatures are fine - max 70 celcius on 100%.

My brother is running the same card - he gets GPU at 100% constantly - no down throtteling - and about 80 celsius.

Why wont my card do the same??

I5 9600K OC 5GHz with max temp 69 celcius
Geforce 1080ti - 11GB
16GB Crossair RAM

If you drop both the CPU and memory to stock speeds, does the problem go away?

PSU info can be found on the label affixed to the body of the PSU itself. This requires opening your case, in most situations, to get the info. With 1000w, you should have more than enough juice to power your current rig.

Also, how many case fans do you have installed? What heatsink are you using to cool your CPU?

I dont have thermal issues. I have a Hightower with 4 fans. I havent looked at the PSU manufactorer but it is 1000W - but quite old.

I use a Noctua NH-D15 heatsink at it keeps everything nice and cool.

I clocked my CPU because I noticed the low FPS issue. It didnt solve my issue at all. I get the stutter and GPU throttles down and underperforms. I dont know how to control it.

Regarding fans, airflow is key.

Typically, front, bottom, and side fans pull cool air into your case (intake)

Top and rear fans remove hot air from inside the case (exhaust).

Are your fans oriented this way?

Your heatsink is an excellent model. Are you using any applications to control your GPU fan speed?

I monitored my themperatures and they all seem fine. Highest one is 79 on my GPU when it tops the 100% GPU usage for 30 seconds. THen it falls when it thorttles down.

I have set my GPU fan on 100% permanently - keeps it cool - still throttles.

Good question - we just talked about that today. We have not tried. I will take my card over to his place this comming week and see if it runs stable on his platform.

No. Doesnt. Not a temperature thing. Im pretty sure. Ive been monitoring my temperature for a while because I thought that was the problem at first.

I have now tried to put the GFX card into my brothers computer. He has a very similar build and the exact same graficscard.

He gets the same problem. It gets between 94-100 % GPU usage and throttles down to about 50%.

It must be a flawed card.

I'm no expert, but you should be able to see why the card gets choked with a program called GPU-Z.:
https://www.techpowerup.com/download/gpu-z/
First, maybye to exclude the game itself being the problem, try downloading a benchmarking application, for example Furmark:
https://geeks3d.com/furmark/
  1. Run the benchmark
  2. While benchmark is running, run GPU-Z
  3. On GPU-Z go to "sensors" tab and look for parameter "PerfCap Reason" (like shown in attached picture)
Maybye this will give us a clue what's going on.
