Hey guys, so I am currently using an LG UB8000 40" 4k tv as my gaming monitor on my pc... and im having a weird problem.

When I set the resolution to 4K, I can set the Hz to 60, same with when I set it to 1080P... but for some reason when I set it to 1440P the only options given are 30Hz and 24... Does anyone know why this is and if its possible to fix?

I have been thinking on selling this or at least putting it to a different use, and buying the Asus ROG swift 1440P Gysnc monitor.. but I am very used to gaming on much larger screens and am not sure if Ill be able to get used to a 27 inch screen but besides that all the features of that monitor seem awesome. Ive never gamed at 144Hz so I don't really know what Im missing but gaming at 1440p 144hz in the newest games is pretty tempting.. I just had high hopes for a great 4k monitor and Im yet to find one.

Solution
I have the same tv 40ub8000 and not only i can have 1080 1440p, 1600p @60fps but i can put them at 77fps (can you say overclocking? ). The only trick is to put your resolution at 1080p then from there create the customs resolutions. So the ones that fit the screen the screen best are the 1080p and 1440p @77hz. Unfortunately you can't oc the screen on 4k. Also even when your at 1440p, the TVs info will still say it is at 1080p :) you guys are welcome

That's awesome haha now try to overclock the screen by raising the refresh rate. Mine went up to 77 fps. The games will show the option to put it at that higher rate. It's a trial and error thing so start changing the refresh rate in the same custom resolution and see how high you can make it.

Im not sure i would notice a difference of 17fps and it sounds dangerous for my tv. 60hz is fine for me and currently my single 980ti cant reach 60fps in most AAA 1440p games anyway. once i get a second 980ti next month,i might look into that.
But thanks a bunch for the info anyways :D

i have 2 R9 290x gpu and have just received the new club3d can 1070 dp 1.2 to hdmi 2.0 adapter which is connected to an 5m hdmi 2.0a cable.
this is the only way you can get 4k running at 60hz on your 4k tv.
and before you ask it does work.I have been playing starwars battlefront at 60hz full 4k on my 49" Samsung 4k tv which looks amazing.
gonna post a video eventually on YouTube of this as nobody has reviewed this yet.

Idk,i have a 980ti and i just bought a high speed hdmi cable and i run 4k on 60hz just fine. You just need your tv to have a hdmi 2.0 port and your video card aswell. I have a 55 inch phillips 4k tv and never had a problem with 4k. Its 1440p that was a problem until recently...

Battlefield and Battlefront have amazing dual GPU support. One of very few games that has it these days.
Check out this link http://www.anandtech.com/show/9874/amd-dual-fiji-gemini-video-card-delayed-to-2016
Got to know what games you play actually support SLI/Crossfire before you can make a good decision on whether its worth the risk.

This is a bit of an ancient thread (I'm still laughing at having best answer for a random guess at one point), and now that I know a bit more about I'm a bit more hesitant to recommend dual GPU setups unless you know that the games you bought it for support it.

Fury X and 980 Ti at least do a great job of 30-40FPS ultra settings at 4K.
And do a good job of getting above 50FPS high settings at 4K.

Turning anti-aliasing off is recommended at resolutions higher than 1080P and seems to help a lot.

During the second half of 2016 there will be new cards coming that will handle 4K 60FPS in more games, so shifting down to 2560x1440 should become less of a problem for gamers who can afford the best graphics card on the market.

Well this thread has nothing to do with SLI but thx for the link anyway :D
Im getting a second 980ti cause i know that most needy AAA games Will probably have sli support. Games like fallout 4 didnt because it ran pretty ok even with a single card cause the graphics were like 5 years old. 980ti sli will handle 4k just fine for about a year i immagine, with aa off. Battlefield 5 will run beautyfully,im sure.(toyally waiting for the division aswell!)

The new pascal cards and AMD's equivalent will probably be even more powerfull than 980ti in SLI but they will also cost more than the titan x currently does. Il probably upgrade in 2-3 years or so. The Nvidia 1080 gtx or whatever the next beast will be called is rumored to have 16 gigs of vram too and the 980ti only has 6 so that will force me to either turn down the settings or bump the resolution down to 2k with aa on. Which i can do now thanks to this thread, yaaaay :D

first of , your PC reads the EDID signal from TV .
since this is not a official PC monitor , like my TV.
you might miss some modeline information , or need to set TV settings right.

it does a default setting from monitor driver to begin, with default windows resultions
then it reads the EDID and it extends the information to the monitor driver.
you can also make a custom override .inf for the monitor driver.
this will allow you to override some settings or ad modelines to windows and the nvidia adapter.
you can install this then at device manager (monitor driver), if driver verification is disabled in windows.
because it is your own custom file without an verification.

but this might be to complicated for some , and there are more easy ways to make custom resolutions in the nvidia menu.
but you need to do this every time, you install a new nvidia driver.
(see bottom picture)
in your case for 1440p , you need a reduced blanking modeline on HDMI.

if on HDMI 2.0
you might try the HDCP settings on the TV menu itself., prefferred set to AUTO.
on HDCP 1.4 you got more bandwidth for 4K 60 Hz 600Mhz
But 1440p 60Hz should work on both asfar i know.
unless the modeline is not reduced blank and >300 Mhz in clock
on HDCP 2.2 the bandwitdh is halve , at 300Mhz
but for 1440p at 60 Hz 300Mhz should be enough .
if the modeline of the 1440p resolution is set to CVT-RB (reduced blanking) , instead of CVT

on 4K @ 60 Hz , 4.4.4. might not work on some TV's, Only 4.2.0 @ 60Hz
----------------------------------------------------------
for Display port 1.2
set monitor to 1.2 (in case of 1.1 option)

for 1440p@60Hz
set display port options to SST mode (single stream)

for 2160p@60Hz 4.4.4
set displayport option to MST (multi stream ,or Auto)
----------------------------------------------------------
you can also try programs like moninfo,
to read the EDID and generate a bin file or custom .inf for the microsoft monitor driver
the bin files can be used to edit the EDID , in for example lightware matrix controller program , or custom resolution utlility.
the latest program Custom resolution utility can also make resolutions and when press OK. it will override the monitor driver.
(RESTART PC to Make changes active)
freesync versions are also on the website of CRU.

to delete the custom settings .
you can remove the monitor driver at device manager and reinstall it there too.
then the custom settings are gone again.

Pixelclock 241,50 = 1440p @ 59.95 Hz
Pixelclock 241,70 = 1440p @ 60 Hz

Thanks alot man it really worked for me too :) although without doing this fix I managed to uncap the 30fps by disabling vsync which caused bad tearing in games but the method you've posted stays at 60fps with vsync on. You're the man :). Playing it on my 4k LG fu690v most games I can max okay at 4k but games like rise of the tomb raider, akrham knight, fallout 4 I need to play at 1440p to get 60fps maxed.

Using a Vizio d55u-d1. Gtx Titan 2013

2160p @ 60Hz 4:2:0
1440p @ 30Hz 4:4:4 / RGB (WHY?)
1080p @ 120Hz 4:4:4 / RGB

The solutions suggested in this thread don't really work, nor do they answer the question.

By creating a custom resolution from 1080p and using automatic timing settings you are forcing your video card to output the higher resolution at a higher refresh rate but your desktop and all UI elements still appear to be squeezed through a 1080p pipeline. I know this is not the actual terminology to use to bare with me.

Just compare the image quality of 1440p @ 30Hz standard res to 1440p @ 60Hz custom resolution. Its not 1440p at all! Yeah, sorry to ruin it for you.

When you try to manually set the Active and Total pixels as well as the Front porch and Sync width to match settings from the standard 2560x1440 @ 30Hz OR the standard 3840x2160 @ 60Hz with the display mode set to 2560x1440 the result is a black screen when I click test. Creating the custom resolution from 1080p works but doesn't give me the benefits of 1440p because the image is not really 2560x1440. The Timing settings in the Create Custom Resolution window stay the same as the 1080p standard res even when you change the display mode settings. Its almost like it's rendered at 1440p, down-scaled to 1080p then up-scaled back up to 1440p, then finally up-scaled again to 3840x2160.

Certain games made on the Unity engine allow you to do full screen 1440p stretched to fit the 3840x2160 screen without changing the display resolution! Why don't all games work like this? It works awesome. Solid 60FPS vsync locked and almost as sharp as 2160p. Setting the same game to 2160p makes it run at 17-31 fps. Some games have resolution scaling that you can set to 50% for your game running at 3840x2160 and the game engine will effectively render the game at 2560x1440. If all games did this we would not have any problems.

So, it's clear that there is no actual solution. My question is why? Why is every sub $700 4k set limited to 30Hz at 1440p while being able to display 2160p at 60Hz? Why didn't all these different manufacturers add that option via firmware? Is it costs and marketing or is there an actual technical reason?

Oh, someone had notice it! I'm not the only one.

To be honest, I think that this problem is from Nvidia cards, because I've been using my RX 470 to play 1440p and 60hz at my 4K TV, and in the TV it shows like in 4K upscaled. But since I changed to a 980Ti, when I try to do the same using 1440p, it shows like 4K upscaled, but locked to 30hz instead of 60hz like I always did.

This is shit, to be honest, there is a problem with Nvidia cards. So, no, the TV's isn't the problem.

Dude... if you can move 4K at 60fps, but you can't 2K at 60fps... obviusly the HDMI isn't the problem.

hi guyz

after like 5 hours of hacking my tv and gpu settings i finally made it work, so first, im running lg55uh664v and gtx970 and connecting through dvi to hdmi cable, it was supporting 4k@60hz but not 1440p or any other res except 1080p at 60hz, what you need to do is go to tv option in your lg and enable something called "HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color" once you do it, it appears 60 hz in your gpu settings :D hope it helps some one, im running also webos 3.0 on my lg dont know if its availible on webos 2.0

enjoy :)

Edgard_2........ I love you!lol, I bought a new sony DN860 Amp and lost my 1440p@60Hz, I totally blamed the Sony HDMI passthrough for being crap! I was really REALLY peeved!
For weeks I tried EVERYTHING from new cables to different ports and every setting I could find on the Amp and the TV, I tried custom resolutions but it didn't work, and as it turns out from your answer it was because I was trying them whilst I was at 1440p@30Hz, all I did was change the 30hz to 60Hz, but it was no good, however setting at 1080p@60hz and changing the 1080p to 1440p worked!! THANK YOU!!!
