why does my external hard drive reports the error "G:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

Why that error happens? How to fix that? I mean just repairing it without losing files on the drive.
How about chkdsk? I haven't tried that, for I was not sure whether chkdsk will do damage to my data.
 
Solution
I don't think chkdsk will do good to data recovery. To get files safe you need data recovery software like eassos recovery. after files are recovered you can try formatting the disk, which can make it normal to use again.
many reasons can cause the problem like yours, just backup important data timely and regularly.
