Why does my laptop read, but not play DVDs?

I've got an Asus X550CA-XX322H and when I put a DVD into the drive, it registers its there but it doesn't play. If I double click it, it shows the entire contents of the DVD so it knows its there, but there is no option to play it. It doesn't even let the auto play pop up, I have no clue what's wrong because it does read them, I have windows media player installed, and its the DVDs I'm attempting to play I have used in DVD players before so I know its not them. What do I do??

Integrated Graphics
Intel i5 duo core processor

I use a VLC player. It's free and plays every video file.

Select media and then click on open disc.

Try the vlc player. Win8 media player doesn't have the codes needed by default, because Microsoft doesn't want to pay for it anymore.
