Question Why does my monitor switch between HDMI and ANALOG?

I am pretty computer illiterate, but I decided to try and get a second monitor. Upon plugging in the HDMI and the power, my computer recognizes it, knows what type of monitor it is, and the screen turns on. My problem is that it doesn't show anything on the monitor, just switches from HDMI to ANALOG for a bit and then just stops and goes black. My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster S24B300. I've never had any problems with my other monitor I have, just this one. I've tried switching HDMI cords, plugging out the power for a bit, even trying a wall socket instead of my power strip. But nothing has been working. I'm really confused as to why this is happening.

have you tried using the Samsung display alone?
