I've had charter to replace everything an still yet I am having this issue so the tech said it was my adapter settings but I really don't know what to do on getting this fixed

It's directly through the modem An my network adapter is saying that the modem isn't the default gateway. an when troubleshooting with windows it resets the adapter an claims to fixed the problem but it doesn't

Can you login to the modem itself to check the actual settings? With this info, you can manually setup your network adapter w/ the correct info(IP, Gateway, DNS). Is your adapter wireless or wired? Also, if you can connect at all, you could try using an elevated command prompt and ipconfig /all command to get the info for the adapter.

No since the modem belongs to charter there is no way to log into it

And here is the info on the network adapter

You should be able to use either Killer software, or basic Windows ethernet settings to input the IPv4 IP address, Gateway, and DNS settings manually rather than rely on DHCP settings. If no luck there, try rolling back or updating the ethernet driver. Do you have other PCs or devices that connect properly to your new modem?

I've had the same issue with a Hp computer with the same results ..and that is the latest driver (Version: 1.1.56.1603 )for the killer network has too many bugs an problems worse than this . I wish I knew I had the knowledge to know what I am doing in the properties of the network adapter

If you are getting a 24 address, it means you are directly connected to the Internet with no NAT whatsoever and very exposed, most people find this unacceptable, is this intentional? Moreover, this setup allows no expansion, how many WAN IP did you purchase from the ISP?

Huh? what are you talking about ..this is just plain internet service through charter communications..

OK... it doesn't matter who ISP. The 24 address is a WAN address, and IP that exists out there for the public to see. Normally when it enters your house, a router changes this address to something like 192 or 10 something, and those are the IP you use INSIDE, this process is called a Network Address Translation, and it should be on everybody's network. Ever heard such thing?

But if u don't know what am talking about then go ahead and do what 1LiquidPC suggests and see what happens. As long as it works right.

Yes also known as NAT ..so what are you trying to say ? that my ip shouldn't start out in 24.?

That's correct. Your internal PC, once NATed, should show 192 or 10 something, standard INTRANET IP addresses.

You, apparently not doing NATing, also signals to me the absence of a router, which normally provides DHCP function to the INTRANET addresses, this DHCP provides two other important functions, gives your PC the CORRECT DNS AND GATEWAY which is the basis of your original complaint.

The DHCP is enabled but my pc is connected directly through the cable modem there isn't a router on my line (Update)
i have reset the modem an before it was connected the ip4 address started out 192. but when the modem was finally done it set it back to 24

What's the make/model of the modem? If I have time I will look it up for you. But if it has a single RJ45 on the back end, that typically means it's a plain modem, and you need add a router to complete the setup.

I don't know how the U.K.? does it these days, in the U.S., the ISP now routinely provides a Modem+Router+WIFI in one single box.

the cable modem/telephone modem is a cisco DPC3216 *Update: I'm at the modem login screen but cannot log into it because charter wont give me access to it
Model: Cisco DPC3216
Vendor: Cisco

Jsmithepa is correct. I completely missed the external IP WAN info. Your internal IP address typically is 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x where x changes depending on settings or DHCP. Ths is what your PC's IP address and Gateway should look like. The "24" is a public IP from yur ISP. A router changes this to 192 or 10 number that "hides" you extrrnal traffic. With your IP being 24, typing in this number in internet address bar would attempt to connect directly to your PC.

Ok and how do I change this ? will this solve the default gateway problem?

It isn't really that big a deal to let your PC have a public IP address, there is still a firewall of some type built into the modem, and the windows firewall. All cable modems used to directly connect to your PC without a router, and it was common to have a public IP right on your computer. NAT isn't really much of a security measure to anyone who actually wants to break in.

Well having a router solved the problem ..the pc cannot find any issues now ..though i'll say this for whomever reads this thread that charter will not let anyone change any setting within their modem to gain access but all a person can do is pull up the modem menu an that's it ( http://192.168.100.1/Docsis_system.asp) I hope someone else has better luck in doing so ..

Glad you found a solution of sorts, though it really shouldn't have been necessary. With that said, most modems these days have routers built in, or people attach their own separate router to the modem. Another option would be to buy your own modem/router compatible with Charter, return their equipment back to them, and you can lower your bill as your no longer would be paying the rental fee on their equipment...plus you can login into it whenever you need to.

Charter communication doesn't allow customers to use their own Equipment therefore you have to use their's
