why does my Passport for Mac say I do not have permission for access files

I purchased a WD My Passport for Mac to back up my files on my old Mac. I wanted to access the pictures and files on my new one but when I open it there is a negative sign by my files and says I do not have permission to see its contents. Does anyone have the answer ? I have the same operating system on both Mac's (which is why I had to purchase a new one because I did not have any more storage space on the old after I upgraded).

I'd strongly recommend you open Disk Utility and check how your WD My Passport is recognized there. You should be able to Repair Disk Permissions which should allow you to resolve the issue. Here's an article from our knowledge base that explains How to test a drive for defects through the Disk Utility.
