Why does my PC constantly check my disks for consistency

PC Specs:

AMD FX-6300 @ 4.1 | Kingston 120GB | Windows 7 Professional 64 bit | XFX Radeon
7750 1GB | 6GB HyperX Blue | Corsair 650W | 500GB Hitachi | NZXT Source 220

I have my data striped across my SSD and my HDD, RAID 0 I think? Anyways, the consistency check thing can take over an hour, today it took roughly 2 hours to complete. Why does it do this? Another thing to mention would be, sometimes my computer becomes completely unresponsive, like I can't even Ctrl +Alt+Delete. This freeze can last for several minutes, or until I just restart the system. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

i would test the hdd with the maker tool also why you did not use 2 ssd for the raid since they are faster then hdd .
