Why does my TV look horrible in PC mode.

Here's the deal. I'm using a roughly 6 year old TV as a monitor and it looks like garbage. The only way to get text and images to not look all pixelized and jagged is to rename the hdmi input to PC. But when I do this the colors on the TV get all washed out and just look super bland and boring. Why is this? There seems to be no way to correct the colors on the TV either.

I built this nice new PC and now I am worried that even when I get a new TV I am going to get terrible washed out colors. Is a gaming monitor my only real option? Or Will i be able to display bright beautiful colors with a newer modern TV?

Please help me before I loose my mind.
