if they have much lower TDP than radeons? i see 670 from many vendors having 550w psu req when 7970 which has much higher tdp and consumption has the same psu req like 670

i have a 500w psu and would like to go to 670/770 when i switch to 2560x1440 but i am kind of confused.

thank you

Most of the PSU requirement said in the manufacturer web is much higher than it actually needed..

They do it for safety reason since it need to cover any kind of configuration of hardware/system people may have...

+1 rdc85 Most people don't think twice about their PSU, and most OEM's use the cheapest unit with a high wattage "advertisement". They need to err on high side with room so spare to attempt to guarantee it will work without liability issues. In reality, unless it's a quality brand the usable safe wattage is about half of what's advertised, give or take 25%! This goes for both Nvidia and AMD.

well i have 500w fortron 82% psu, but its nearly 3 yo and i have a q9550 little oced. so with evga 660ftw i am getting 239watt usage from wall.

but 7970 has TDP of 230-250Watt (GHz edition) while 670 has 170Watt TDP, yet both have psu req. 500-550Watt
now i would like to purchase a 4gb version of 670 but these have 550Watt psu req. i guess i will have to wait and see how 770 will fare

But AMD does the opposite with their high-end GPUs.

yeah my psu is good and the tdp of 660 is 140 so tdp of 670 170 when my system draws at max 239W from wall should really suffice even if the psu is 3yo and they write what psu req is 550w

ok now i checked evga site and even their 4gb 670 have 500w req so i should be safe anyway. i will try to wait for 770 and then purchase one
