Discussion Why exactly is UEBS2 so demanding?

I've recently started playing UEBS2

I'm wondering why the game is so demanding, since the graphics aren't amazing. On the one hand, I understand that there could be performance issues with over a few million units like I have, but I also notice that not all of these units seem to be rendered all the time (not the defeated ones anyway). I don't understand how this game can be using 15GB of VRAM at 1440p lowest settings. Changing the settings doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I think I went from 15 to 18 fps from lowest settings to ultra, I know my GPU is fully utilized.

Does your CPU hit and stay at or above 95% utilization?
If yes, there's your bottleneck.
Nope. 100% GPU limited. I know what the limitation is. That’s not what asking. I’m asking what makes the game use so much GPU? I suppose maybe rendering all the units, or maybe damage calculation, I’m not really sure what’s the biggest factor.

Damage calculation would generally be on the CPU, though I wouldn't be surprised if that could be GPU accelerated these days.

It is possibly just a very poorly optimized game. It may be rendering things with the GPU that you can't even see. Overlapping enemies, using high poly models for all viewing distances. Over reliance on physics simulation. Things of that nature.
