It was not that long ago a 500gb drive was 35 dollars and a 1tb drive was $50.
those same drives I bought at those prices are now $49 and $79
these are all newegg prices

I am really looking for both a very inexpensive 500gb drive and a good deal on 2tb drive.

Solution
When Thailand dries out and stocks build back up. According to the article, "several quarters." Bear in mind that the people on the scene may be giving first priority to housing, food, and sanitation over restoring drive manufacturing capacity.

They are use to it and have a lot of experience in responding to this, so it will not take too long. After a few weeks of rebuilding it will be all back to normal.

man these prices are outrageous.
I have looked around a bit and everytime i see a lower price listed on some shopping engine, when you actually go to the site its much higher or out of stock.

SSD are starting to look very attractive with sale prices on 120gb down in the $150 range.
I got 120gb corsair force 3 yesterday for $140

And we're getting spanked twice as hard in UK:
500GB = GBP85 ($137)
1TB = GBP102 ($165)
2TB = GBP120 ($195)

A 2TB price per GB looks like a bargain now compared to the other options....

Hdd prices dropped so low then came the flood. Now Hdd manufacturers got the price back in their grips and can control it as they see fit. They are milking the market on purpose now using the flood as a excuse

Seagate HD manufacturing plant in Wuxi, China.
Kuala Lumpur
Kumi, South Korea
Beijing
^What about those plants? Did they flood as well?

i got a 2 TB external at walmart for $89 and with tax $93.75... but it was a Seagate and if you look in this forum you can see how that ended...

still, i dont remember seeing anything nearly that expensive besides the overpriced brands that break immediately.

where are you guys finding these statistics? idk much about computers [yet] so i would appreciate the info.

the real question is if you see better prices
where are they?

amazon
newegg
anywhere all have very high prices
i agree neweeg has raised prices more then the current market should dictate
but anywhere you look they are still very expensive

if i understand you correctly then u wish to know where good deals are.
'the real question is if you see better prices, where are they?'
i have been told The Micro Center is very cheap and offers quality.

if i misunderstood the question then i guess just ignore me and chuckle i guess.

yes micro center does have good prices.
but mostly for people who can walk into a store.
saw some great deals the site
95 or maybe 100 percent of the deals i wanted to buy were only available in the store.
sent them a note about allowing me to see only items that could be shipped on the site but never heard back from them.

$79 would be great for a 1TB HDD now.

I just got this email with a sale on the WD Black 1TB:

I bought this same drive earlier this year for around $75.

In under 3 months ago I had brought a External HDD Seagate 2TB 7200rpm 3.5 USB 3.0 for 3600 Rubble around $110 AUD, I was looking on buying a internal hard drive, I was shocked at the price of hard drives and how much they have gone up by, in the same shop now for the same hard drive what I had brought it now risen to 5900 rubble around $185 for the same hard drive, this is a product of China and assembled in China on it Label far from Thailand and Japan, it looks like China wants to make money from other country’s misfortune, I would be happy to pay the extra $75 AUD if this money was going to help Thailand or Japan get their IT back to where it was 6 months ago, but for this money to make some ones wallet bigger with greed, I happy to wait on buying a new hard drive, and I hope others will wait too, until HDD come back to a price that is fare for all, in all countries, Redfox69

simple supply and demand.
drives are a commodity like anything else.

if there was a freeze in Florida the price of orange juice would go up.
even if that juice was made in California.

drives made in china would sell out if price was reasonable.
They do not have enough drives to make up for shortage from Thailand.
why should they sell out of their drives for less then current prices when they can sell at the market price and make more profits?
