I want to be able 2 download something rather than using up my data to watch it. My phone has wi go but is saying needs a WiFi connection to do it? Please help me understand

To "download" something...that something has to come from somewhere else.
It won't just appear in your phone by magic.

It comes in over the airwaves.
Either your phone data plan, or WiFi.

Your question can be read this way:
"I want to download something while on WiFi, to watch it later when I would have only 3G/4G data.". And this boils down to whether the item you want to download is available for download (eg a book), or only online (eg YouTube video, although this is not the perfect example).
