Why i can't install 3rd gen processor on 2nd gen socket?

Guys i have a pre built desktop with core i5-2310 processor and i wish to upgrade it to the maximum that is possible. Since 2nd and 3rd gen processors use the same socket i thought i could upgrade to i7-3770 but that seems impossible. I looked up some dell forums online and they suggest that it's not possible and i can only use a processor from 2nd gen, even if i have the latest bios i.e. A10 and that dell did not even test any thing over i5-2400 for this desktop i.e dell inspiron 620s. What are your opinions about this? Why i can't upgrade to a processor that requires the same socket? May be i can upgrade if i install a 3rd party motherboard? I have mini itx motherboard.

Dell does not want to sell you an upgrade, they want you to buy a whole new system. Even though a 2nd gen motherboard can run a 3rd gen chip, OEM tend not to release a bios update to support the new cpu and the power delivery may not be up to snuff. They also do not want to deal with people who mess up the upgrade process. Bent pins, bought a bad part and blame the OEM, etc.

With the stock motherboard, the I7-2600S at 65W Is the only I7 that has a possibility to work. I cannot find anyone who has done this successfully

Do you have this Ultra small form factor 620s?

Stock setup looks like max cpu is possibly I7 2600S, or I5 2500 for sure. If the video is right, then a 1030 gt low...
One of the downsides of the older OEM/prebuilt systems.
Lousy OEM motherboard with restrictions likely isn't compatible with any Ivy Bridge(3rd gen) processors - gimped bioses.
I7 2600k could be your best bet... but depending on applications, you may get more performance from a SATA SSD, if you don't have one already.

RAM should be able to go to 16GB 2x8GB 1333MHz the controller is on the CPU. But dell and crucial say 8GB 2x4GB is max.
You can do a 2.5 inch SATA SSD but need to clone it with a USB to SATA cable, then since the motherboard only has 2 sata connectors you replace the hdd or do without the dvd

It looks like you could replace the motherboard with an ITX standard board, the I/O shield can be replaced to match the new board. And that would allow a 1050TI low profile

Which ITX board do you have? The swap might break your windows activation. Dell uses slic 2.1 for windows 7 tied into the motherboard and 10 ties to the motherboard also.

That link doesn't actually correspond to Dell inspiron 620s but my desktop is indeed small form factor. It's not that small and has a 250 watt power supply. I don't think ultra SFF desktops even existed at the time we bought this desktop. Core i7-2600S sounds like a decent upgrade but i am not sure enough. By the way i am actually running a GT 1030 on this PC. Memory i have already upgraded to the max that is 8GB in dual channel, 1333 MHz. The only problem is that according to Intel H61 supports 16 GB RAM however dell manual says i could only use 8GB. Must be a motherboard issue again. Anyway if i could upgrade to 2600 or 2700 k it would be awesome.

ok, then this is the one?
with this motherboard?

Micro atx form. Still most likely limited to a 65W cpu. The 1050 TI linked above will work, it comes with the low profile brackets. Can add a SSD and not lose hdd or optical, but need a sata power Y splitter and another sata data cable.

Looks like one seller had a 620 with 2600S at one time, it uses the same motherboard as the 620S
