Why intel core i5 has 2 core only

Yeah, intel's mobile 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) lineup is a bit weird.
there is even the i7-2620M, which is marketed as a Core i7 but its only a 2 Core with HyperThreading...

I wish they would have kept it somewhat clean or changed the nomenclature entirely like:

i3 = 2 core w/HT
i5 = 4 core
i7 = 4 core w/HT
i8 = 8 core (when it happens)
i9 = who knows

This having 2 core processors falling in the i3, i5 and i7 makes it a pain in the butt when researching processors.

Its a mobile I5 so it will be a dual core most of the time.

QM means quad
M means dual HT
Celeron means dual
Bigger numbers are faster
pretty simple...

Sorry Dadiggle you would be incorrect in this case
The Intel Core i5-2540M is only a dual core processor with hyperthreading.

And yes Unique Name, I did not see it in certain OEM channels where they specified "QM" as a suffix for the true quad core models. My mistake on that one.

I still think its dumb on intels part to give a dual core processor the name i7 regardless.

I was kidding mostly. I agree it's weird and we're not even into why certain CPU's are missing AES, etc.
