Why is 8-pin EPS keyed differently from 4+4 pin?

I noticed that the 4+4 pin is keyed differently than the 8-pin. Yet they both fit an 8-pin header. Why aren't they keyed the same?

Because shapes don't matter even some 8 pins will very in shapes. They can only go in in one way clip over latch.

Seriously? Shapes don't matter? Then why bother? Rounds will fit squares, but squares will not fit rounds.
I'm not disputing your answer, just surprised is all.
