Solution
Definitely not a gimmick - it works!

To answer the OP's question, Apple's tactic seems to be to generate a lot of excitement around their products, and this has helped them to create a technology fashion brand. The secrecy creates an air of mystery around their products, so the big thing is to be seen with an iPad 2 on the day it is released etc.

A couple of reasons that come to mind are competition - they want every bit of competitive advantage they can get, and if they can boost this by holding back knowledge of a product until launch they will. Also, excitement - if they can host a fancy unveiling of a product or feature it attracts attention to it, thereby helping sales, etc.

You are really implying it is more than a marketing gimmick by Apple.
