After unlocking the 4th core on my Athlon II X3 455, it is recognized as a Phenom II X4 B55. Since the Athlon II Propus still has no L3 cache even with the 4th core unlocked, why isn't it recognized as an Athlon II X4 instead of a Phenom II X4?

Solution
It just happens. I think it originates from when Athlons used Phenom Deneb core dies when the Athlon ii/ Phenom ii series originally came out. When you unlocked an Athlon tri core for instance you could have possibly had a full blown deneb Phenom ii core with L3. But now the Athlons have their own bespoke core without L3, but the naming system must have stayed the same I suppose

+1 for the naming scheme. it seems that they carried the names over on both the deneb and propus cores even though they are slightly different dies (ie deneb cores have L3 cache propus cores donot.).

Ah! That makes sense. I totally forgot that Athlon IIs started life as crippled Phenom IIs.
