Yes, but aren't the board manufacturers the ones setting the prices? The same board manufacturers that make Intel boards make Ryzen boards. Is it less expensive to make equivalent AMD platforms than Intel?

intel makes the chipset and sells them for more than amd charges for their chipset. cost gets passed on to consumers.

you might be thinking of those mega over engineered boards each brand sells. you know the "super killer gamin oc titan platinum edition" that run a couple hundred more than standard boards. they are priced by the manufacturer but contain tons of added, extra features most people don't need nor will ever use. they are aimed at the folks looking to compensate for a ..... eeerrrrrr.... nevermind......

and they do it because they can. folks are willing to buy them at those prices, so no reason for manufacturers to lower the price. simple economics. supply and demand. even though amd has all but caught intel in performance and beats them in core counts at each price point, many people still pay the intel tax for that extra couple % of performance. intel is still sold out most of the time.

but don't think amd would not do the same if folks were willing to pay. they were simply behind and had to stay in the game with cheaper prices and better value perspective for average users. let them pull way out ahead of intel and see how those prices will rise quick fast and in a hurry.

Intel does not sell a 'computing device'. Intel sells prestige...cachet...image.

Board mfr's are just along for the ride.

Because their brand name carries the most clout and for literally years AMD didn't offer them any serious competition.
