[SOLVED] Why is it called M.2 and not just M2?

My friend came up with this question earlier and I can't find an answer anywhere on the internet! Anybody have any ideas? I haven't used Tom's for a few years so this is a great way to break my absence streak!

Form factor and keying. M is the form factor, 2 is the "2nd generation". The dot delineates between the two descriptors.
