Hey guys,
I just got real curious lately. I noticed that my Dimension 2400 is dreadfully slow even though I've got Ubuntu installed on it, and my newer HP laptop is running windows vista with all the crap HP puts on there. They both have 32bit single core processors, both 2.4 Ghz, both have 1GB ram on them. The only thing I can think of that's really different is the HDD and MOBO. What underlying factors make the laptop so much more powerful even though on paper they look identical? Is the technology of the ram making the difference such as type frequency and latency? Is it the difference in the cache on the processor? I fully understand that my Dimension 2400 is going to be slower than my new laptop as it was manufactured ~7 years before the laptop, I was just wondering what is better about the laptop.

what cpu does the laptop have?

7 years is a long time in the computer world. If it's a 2.4ghz celeron w\ 533fsb, it's going to be alot slower than most anything out today.

Most cpu's are dual core now, which is why i'm a little curious what the cpu is if it's a new laptop w\ single core.
