why is my display adapter listed twice in device manager

Most likely your PC had a dual GPU graphics card like the 4870 X2 or GTX 295, GTX 590 etc.

Also, depends on the number of outputs. I have a laptop with an integrated card, and it shows it twice: one for the main display, and one for the VGA port.

Good point, dont know if its a notebook or desktop!
Also for that matter the newer Sandy Bridge PC's can have integrated as well as PCIe GPU's.

Yep! That's it... I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook (little ittty bittty thing) with a video output for a monitor. Thanks for your response.
