Hey guys,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5579 Laptop.

The specs for the laptop are:
Intel Core i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60hz / 1.80hz
8gb of RAM 2400MHz
Intel UHD Graphics 620
1TB HHD Storage (From which 900gb is free)

From the moment I got this laptop 8 months ago until today, it's always been very slow. It takes almost 3 minutes for it to start up.

Why is that? What can I do to make it faster?

Exactly this.

Your laptop's specs aren't bad. What is letting you down is that mechanical drive. Those things are GLACIALLY slow in laptops. A good SSD will get your boot times WAY faster and make the whole PC feel a lot more responsive.

Thank you very much. How do I know if my laptop can take an ssd? And how do I know what ssd to buy?

You have a mechanical drive so, it can take a 2.5 inch SATA SSD, you just have so swap them and install windows on the SSD, then move over your files with an adapter that lets you use your HDD on a USB connection. The process looks more daunting than it actually is.

So, you get yourself one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E4VHSYG?aaxitk=PQ1l81kppvfzxo7734vT4g
Or if you want to keep your HDD as an external drive to use for storage one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M08LCXW/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_EJN7CbRVPETGY

Then get any 2.5" SSD, my recommendation is either a Crucial or a Samsung drive. It doesn't have to be one of the expensive ones.

Now, what you can do at this point is get a utility to clone your current drive onto the SSD, or just make some Windows install media with the Installation Media tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 , put the install on a thumb drive, and install Windows once you swap the drive.

Then follow this quick YouTube guide on how to take the drive out

then reverse the steps with the new drive to put it in.

Once the drive is in you either boot up (if you used a cloning utility) or install Windows on the new drive.
