[SOLVED] Why is my PC freezing when trying to use another application?

When playing a game, if I try to adjust a setting on another application like Spotify or Discord for example. As soon as I click the 2nd applications window my PC freezes. No blue Screen or crash but freezes. Sometimes I can access my task manager but can't actually do anything. I can move around the mouse but that's about it. It won't let me reboot or close apps so I have to hold down power button to turn it off and on again.

I have a dual monitor setup and have been using this PC for the past 5 years and this only started last week.

GTX 970
8gb 1800mhz RAM
120 GB SSD (Main Drive)
1TB SSD
1TB HDD
800w PSU

Depends on the game I suppose. 8 GB seems a bit light to be running a demanding game, and then trying to switch researces (even if a small amount) to another app at the same time.
