why is my pc is showing 12gb when i have 16gb

I have 2 hyperX 4gb in dual channel and I just bought one 8gb ddr3 memory
Mismatching ram is not recommended as 3 sticks will only run in single channel. Stick may need to be re-seated or the slot is dead.
