Why is my PC using so much memory?

I have 12gb memory on my laptop but whenever I play a game my memory usage hovers 85%-99% and I get frequent crashes. Here is an example:

I didn't add everything up but I'm certain the programs I have open do not equal 85% of 12gb. What is wrong?

With big programs closed I am sitting around 50% memory usage. What the hell?

What is the make and model of your laptop? Are you on the latest BIOS update for your laptop? It might be a memory leak but you're also going to have to state which game(s) you play to experience this issue. Best way to check for your memory usage, is right after booting into GUI, check what System Resource Monitor says.

All games. Even if I'm not playing games my memory is very high (see second image).

My laptop is MSI 15.6" GE62VR Apache Pro-024

I've never done anything specifically with BIOS in my life so I'm not sure if I'm updated or not? Is that not an automatic thing with system updates?

Set maximum size to a larger value (8192 MB).

Memory is still 50% with nothing open

You should get no more crashes (caused by low virtual memory).
