Hey guys,

I found out that my speed fluctuates from 30mbps to 10mbps ( this is noticeble when I download games on Steam) . I assume that my ethernet cable was bottleneck because my ethernet cable got kinked by the door .

I found it weird that online gaming is playable for me because my ping is stable compare to my internet speed.

What cause this problem?

Solution
If you damage the cable it is does not slow the data down you just get more packet errors which appears as packet loss. In directly it slows things down because this lost data must be resent but it will show on ping commands.

To verify you have no issues in your house ping the router ip address with a packet length of say 1300 on a continuous ping. Normally you will see no loss.....other than a packet or two at the start sometimes.

You also want to compare your download speeds on one of the speed test sites. You should get close to the rated speed your ISP is selling you. 30mbits/sec is extremely slow so you should get better.

Its hard to say many people have issue with steam download and there are many theories as to why...
Or it can have something to do with the aggregation 😀

Basic theory gores like this>
Since there is hell of a chance all users will use all their bandwidth at the same time, many companies share more resources than they have. For example I can share 1 GB/s line between 10 users and promise everyone 100MB/s, or I can share the same line between 300 users. The people who check mails / youtube / etc, have no chance to max the line and will never notice. But users downloading large chunks of data will notice lowered speeds especially when lots of people go online /from 1600-2200/ and even more lowered when everybody starts download crap /from midnight to 0600-0700/...

I was aware about people sharing some sht that reduced internet speed.

I got some people sharing my internet but never fluctuates so badly like my current situation .
