Why is the GTX 1070 so expensive?

Hey guys, I know this sounds like a bit of a pointless question, but why is the GTX 1070 so expensive? It should be like £300 max yet it's nearly £400 on amazon, and AMD don't make any good graphics cards so basically there are no options for me to upgrade from my 680 right now... Anyone know anywhere you can get it for £300? Or maybe £350 at a push? Thanks! :)

If the latest leak are real you may get a better price on the 2070. Nvidia is said to be rebadging the 10 series early next year at a price cut. The 2080 price was $499, 2070 $349, and 2060ti $229. The 2060ti the same card as the 1060 6gb with the 1060 3gb getting just the 2060 name.
Thanks guys, I guess I'll have to wait even longer for them to drop the price... Or wait and see what AMD come up with...
Of course the RX 480 is way better than the GTX 680 but the 1070 is even better than the RX 480, and I just don't think the RX 480 is much of an upgrade compared to what the GTX 1070 would give me.
Reason I think it should be £300 max is cause you could get GTX 970's for well under that a few months after launch; what makes the 1070 so special? It's not a high end card... Just really disappointed as I was hoping to upgrade to the 1070 but it's still hugely overpriced compared to all the years before 🙁

The 970 and 1070 have been very different prices since the beginning. NVIDIA's decision is likely due to several factors, including very limited competition from AMD.
However also consider that the 970 was a 60 FPS @ 1080p card and the 1070 is a 60 FPS @ 1440p card only one generation apart. For that level of performance you have to expect a price increase.

Yeah I wish AMD would make good graphics cards, I remember a few years ago you could actually choose which company to go with based on price vs performance, but since AMD don't make any graphics cards anywhere near the performance of the 1070, there's virtually no competition 🙁

I guess I'll have to either wait for 2017 when AMD release their new GPU's and hope they're good, or just hope the 1070 eventually drops in price, I would kinda prefer to go with NVIDIA since a lot of my games like GTA 5 seem to run better on NVIDIA cards.

I mean to be fair the 680 is still a good card now and it's lasted me well, but I can't really run the new games at very high settings like I used to be able to.

This is where we disagree. The $400 1070 is better than the $650 980 Ti and $1000+ Titan X from the previous generation. That is why the price was increased from what they charged for the 970. The price went up when compared to a 970 but the 1070 is also in an entirely different performance class. Like someone else said, a 970 was good for 1080p 60 FPS gaming but the 1070 can do the same at 1440p.

A 1070 may not be as good as a 1080 or Pascal Titan X but it is better than every other gaming GPU that exists. For me that does make it a high end card right now. I would have loved to be able to buy my 1070 for the same price I bought my 970 but in my opinion the price I paid is justified by the performance I am getting.

I don't see why I should pay so much more for the 1070 just because it's better than the 970; it's a new graphics card, that's to be expected! The 970 was way better than the 770 yet it was even cheaper than the 770 at launch...

I don't know who you are, I don't know what you do - but know this.. you made me laugh. Hard.

The 1070 is better than the old TitanX.

The 1070 will end up being about 200% better than the 970. As directX 12 progresses and I think the 10xx series card will end up taking a bigger role in games reducing the load on the CPU. MAYBE!!!!!!...

The price isn't inflated. The performance return does justify the investment. For the 1080's PFS boost, is the price justified? Not in my opinion. Paying for status? No thank you.

And then Nvidia when ahead and pushed us up against a wall and proceeded to body slam us. Want to marry two 570s? 670's? How about two 970s? We can. BUT Nvidia made these cards very bad. If were were to go SLI with two 1060s it could beat the performance of a single 1080 for less money. Oh so very greedy on Nvidia's part. Removing the SLI capability? (censoreds)

Wow.. The typical nvidia fanboy..
"AMD doesn't make good GPU's", they make good GPU's.
They just haven't made one in that price range yet.
Right now, the RX480 is a bit better than the 1060 at the same price. It also offers more VRAM.
I'm more of an AMD "fanboy" as I call it, because Nvidia have made some pretty douche moves in the past.
That doesn't mean I don't like Nvidia, it just means I prefer AMD when I can. Like 1060 vs RX480.
The RX490 will drop soon, judging by some leaks,(Not a very reliable source, I know) wait for that if you don't want to pay that much for the 1070.

But once Nvidia gets their head out of their proverbial cubicles and improves their directX 12 capabilities I think the balance will shift once again. AMD is whooping on Nvidia where DX12 is concerned.

Firstly, can't compare 1070 and 970. If you look, the 1060 now holds the mainstream 1080p with the rx480.

1070 pretty much third fastest single card available hence the price. I actually think it's good value vs the 1080 which is in UK 50% more but for 20% ish more power depending on game.

Also, everyone forgets the Fury X which is the fastest amd card and can hold its own.

The reason everyone decided the Fury X might as well not exist anymore for new buyers is because it was a $600+ card that got beat by a $400 1070. As soon as the 1070 was announced it no longer made any sense to even consider the Fury X.

That being said, things have changed. Prices on the Fury and Fury X have dropped to bring them more in line where they should be when compared to other cards on the market (and get them off the shelves before AMD's new cards come out).

Right now Amazon has a Sapphire Nitro Fury for $259.99. With prices like that it has to be considered by people shopping for a 1060 6GB or 480 8GB.

They also have a Sapphire Fury X for $419.99. At that price the 1070 still makes more sense though.
