Why Is The I5 6600k lagging?

i own an I5 6600k right and so this was an upgrade from the FX 6300 with my graphics card being the GTX 950 FTW, anyways so with the old processor and the 950 I would get around 30-40 FPS in games, in my favorites, 25 but I upgraded and now Im getting 60-100 with still the same graphics card but the only issue is that I get random lag spikes and the game will occasionally freeze for 5-10 seconds. So I think my cooler is the issue, I have a cooler master Hyper T4, if you want to look, here is a link for it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103182 is that good enough to keep my processor (Not yet overclocked) at a decent level?

You need to figure out what's going on in those 5-10 seconds where the game lag/freezes.

Have HW-Monitor, GPU-Z and task manager running (on a second screen if possible) and look what happens when the game stops. What are temps like? Is the CPU running at 100%? GPU? The performance tab of Windows Task Manager will also tell you about disk usage (as in performance - not capacity). I had random lock ups in games and found that my disk was running at 100% when I had the issue. Turned out the disk was dying and trying to reallocate bad blocks. That probably won't be your issue, but the point is, you need to figure out where the issue is.

Okay guys so I installed MSI Afterburner and found that my CPU temps average at about 30C which I am prety sure is average, my GPU is at about 60c which I also think is average but what I do notice is that my GPU usage is always at about 90-99% while my CPU usage is at about 40-50% most the time. When i get these lag spike I see that usage for both of these drop down MAJOR, GPU to 0% and CPU to about 13%

So up until the point it "drops", that's exactly what you'd expect and want. GPU usage in the high 90s, CPU usage nice and low. That means the rest of your system is keeping up and ensuring the GPU is working as hard as it can... exactly how you want it.

What else is happening when the performance drops? Disk usage? RAM usage? Go to CPU and sort your processes via CPU usage... is anything spiking?

RAM usage stays the same, CPU and GPU usage as stated before drop way down low, I will check my disc usage later today.

Im not really sure how to check the even log nor what my system rating is, how do I do that?

u can type both of them separately on start menu...
system rating will give u a comprehensive idea as to which component might be lagging behind in performance...where u shd start looking from...
event viewer is like a fault log book, where any major/minor event during the operation of ur pc is logged...u can google how to check it...

Definitely check the Event Viewer - particularly the System Log, but check others too. It's sorted via date order, so play the game, note the exact time it freezes on you (to the nearest few seconds you can), and then go hunting in the Event Log at that time. That's a good suggestion as it will often pick up driver issues or even certain hardware issues and point you in the right direction.

I'm not so sure about the system rating as the issue appears to be sporadic and probably won't crop up, but for sure there's no harm in trying.

Alright so I found the Event Viewer right but I have absolutely no idea what it is that I am looking for? Something I noticed today though that I think should be pointed out is that I can see terrain loading in front of me which is something that I have never seen on my old processor, maybe that changes the story on this?

Have you checked disk usage and which processes are using CPU when your system freezes like I advised above? You still need to that.

Why not google or youtube how to use eventviewer... and make sure you've noted the time you had the issue (as I advised in your quoted text above). We could answer, but I'm sure it's been answered thousands of times elsewhere.

Alright so I looked at the event viewer and there was absolutely nothing out of the ordinary, when I look at disk usage, its always at 100% unless the computer is just sitting on the homescreen on is on the internet, basically if its not running a light app then its at 100 (As far as Ive seen because I checked it by tabbing out and looking) as for the processes my CPU is using I am not really sure what you mean about that.

So your disk is sitting at close to 100% "Highest Active Time" most of the time? That's a big problem.

Can you open "resource monitor" and go the "disk" section: Under "Processes with Disk Activity", what's using all your disk IO? It should list the applications sorted via "Total B/Sec", so the highest disk using processes are on the top. What are they and on average how much are they using?

I gotta go now, but the other thing to try is download HD Tune and do two things:
1) Run the disk check/scan thing (can't remember exactly what it's called). It looks for bad blocks which it'll colour in Red. Takes time.
2) Look in SMART data to see if there are any obvious errors or issues... this can be kinda tricky to figure out "normal" from bad stuff, you might to do some Googling and spend some time. But you'll be waiting on the disk scan anyway.

It's possible that your HDD is dying, also possible that you have some software misbehaving eating up all your IO.

wat @rhysiam suggested is to run chkdsk /r/f at elevated cmd...u can also run error checking from the disk properties > tools...alternatively u can download harddisksentinnel and check the health and smart data...the smart data column in that app is more revealing...

i agree with above...with 100% disk usage consistently, u might have a bad disk there...

Actually I was referring to the check disk tool in HD Tune, was at work and couldn't remember what it's called. At home now: it's called "Error Scan".

Having said that, Chkdsk would work too, HD Tune GUI makes it a little easier that's all. I haven't used HDsentinel, happy with HD Tune, but for sure OP can try that instead.

Well actually what the issue really is is that I did not do a OS reinstallation so the old driveres are screwing with the new ones, I installed windows 10 so that in theory should fix it being its the same as reinstalling the OS, isnt it?

ideally drivers have nothing to do with ur hdd...unless there is some kind of bug issue...the fact that ur disks are consistently 100% usually has nothing to do with OS either unless theres some kind of malware driving it...
but wat u said is a little confusing to me...
did u do install win10 or u didnt???
