Why is there no sound for my new gaming pc?

So I recently finished building my pc, and all is well apart from there is no audio!

I fiddled around with the realtek drivers, uninstalling them, reinstalling them, disabling one of the audio thingy-majiggys (apologies, I'm very much a noob with this stuff)I believe it was an AMD HD device or something

I'm currently running Windows 10 pro, the speaker icon has a red cross on it (it didn't before so I must have screwed something up even further!) , I have a monitor with speakers which is connected via DisplayPort...

I've spent a lot of time on this pc, agonising over the cpu installation and overall being extremely neurotic about the whole process - this audio issue is making it worse Any help would be much appreciated, if I need to provide any more information please let me know.

What speakers do you have connected? Assuming you have a case with front panel audio and it's connected. Try connecting headphones and see if the audio comes out there. If so, it's an issue of speakers being connected properly. A "red X" over the speaker usually implies no speakers are connected.

If using the monitor speakers, then there is likely an audio cable to connect, looks like a headphone jack, unless it uses the DP for audio input. As for the AMD HD Audio, that is to allow for the GPU to output audio over HDMI and Displayport. It gets installed as part of the driver you get from AMD for your GPU.

I put in my headphones and they worked! (?! - even though they didn't before)
Is there some wire I'm missing to put in my monitor by any chance?
As soon as I plug in my headphones, ASUS High Definition Audio comes up, and I have to pick headphones before the sound comes.

There is either a port on the monitor (near the GPU cable connection) that looks similar to a headphone jack. If it's there, then you need to use a cable to conenct it from the monitor to the audio out on the motherboard (usually the green port). If there is no headphone type port, then try re-installing the AMD HD audio and then as mentioned, go to the control panel and set the monitor speakers as the default. Probably the white port shown here(consult your documentation that came with the monitor):

There is a green port that I think you're talking about, and when I plug it in they do recognise it and say 'is this a headphone or a speaker?' and I click 'speaker' - yet still, nothing! When I look at the sound control panel, it says the realtek is the hd audio device as default, and I can see by the moving lines that the sound is there... it just doesn't seem to be coming through the monitor speakers.

Try the other port on the monitor and make sure the volume is up. Here is a review:

Volume is cranked up, and I've tried both of the ports now, connecting them to the lime green Line Out port and the black rear speaker out port... neither worked unfortunately

Initially I did install them from the Asus website, however it just screwed things up more so I uninstalled them. When I go into device manager now and search for driver updates through there, windows tell that they're up to date.

Yes I've connected the audio cable from my monitor to the ports on the back of my pc (where the motherboard's ports are).. so far I've tried connecting it to the orange port, the black port and the lime port... none did anything.

I'll try installing the latest drivers again, if you insist :lol:

1. What type of Video cable are you using? It has to be HDMI or DP to get audio.
2. You have to download and install your Video Drivers for your graphics card, and then make sure you enable audio to be sent over the video cable.
3. You have to set the monitor as your Default Audio Device in windows Speaker Settings.
4. If you want to run a 3.5mm audio jack cable between your motherboards audio, connect the Green/Lime port and the Port 5 on the monitor as shown in the picture below:

Well first off the speakers that are part of your monitor really don't do anything, and the sound won't come from hooking up your monitor to another port won't solve that. I ran into a similar issue with one of my PCs and found that nothing tried really works. You should be able to get sound if you plug your speakers directly into the headphone jack, but don't use the ones on your monitor.

I'm using DisplayPort, as for setting the monitor as the default audio device, the monitor isn't appearing as a device to pick. I have connected the audio jack cable as instructed. Am installing the drivers for the graphics card as I speak (or type )

Guys, it works! Went into AMD and downloaded their quick install software and the monitor popped up as an audio device Much thanks to all of your answers, you've all helped me immensely; I wish I could pick multiple best answers!
