Well first of all Id like to say that I have a really silent setup.. More about that here: https://anotepad.com/notes/j8yiei
Now to the topic.. I bought the Wd Gold 4 TB HDD like two months ago.. I know you might think that I am retarded doing so, considering how quiet build I have if you read the notepad, however I just need something much bigger for games and mostly for footage recording as I intend to do few more long playthrus of few unnamed games, and publish to youtube.. Now if we talk about the noise, well.. yeah it is a pretty noisy hard drive, however I dont mind that cos I have it set to shut the fck up after 5 minutes of being inactive, so it would be turned off most of the time until I start some game, or just start recording game that is on SSD, or just desktop ofc..
Now just a few days back, I bought the WD Gold 10 TB as only a Data Center hard disk, in its true meaning.. Id like to have it in a portable usb box ( The single HDD box with usb 3.0 and 12V adapter, the kind you can take anywhere to access your data) and store all the games, movies and documents.. (I have a WD Blue 3 TB for that purpose, however I ran out of space, having pretty much everything I wanted to have there, however its not future proof as its nearly full)
So well.. I took the WD Gold 10 TB hdd, plugged it in via sata first so I can format it ofc, and started my system.. Both disks went online as expected, went into the Disk Management and started formatting it.. Then, something like 5 minutes into formatting it, I heard a disk spin-down when all of the sudden I cant hear anything.. But.. that cant be because I am formatting the drive right ? So I open up the case, put my ear to the WD Gold 10 TB hdd, hearing very slight buzzing and a very slight and short read/write sound every 3 to 5 seconds.. Then believe me or not, the WD Gold 4 TB hdd, wakes up for whatever the reason (Probably just ntfs loglife writes) making ton of spin-up noise right close to my ear !
Now to the question for you: What the actual fk ? How is it even possible that I cant hear a thing being 50 cm from my case when the much bigger 10 TB one is spinning, and having the 4 TB one making a ton of unpleasant read/write and regular spinning noise ? I dare to even say that this disk is actually even more quiet than the small ones that are used in laptops.. This really surprised me even to the point where I am starting to consider a second buy of this drive, selling the 4 TB one, having it in its place
(Id like to leave this as request solution not as discussion, where solution would be explanation of how is this even possible, because the noise levels difference is really high)
