Why isn't my monitor getting a signal from my pc?

I have a HP w2071d monitor, and when it turns on all it says is "no signal found", or "monitor going to sleep". I have tried to use a DVI cable to connect my monitor and my graphics card, and I have tried using a DisplayPort to VGA adapter, and neither of them worked. In case it is relevant information, I have an Asus Prime Z370-p motherboard and an intel i5 8600k. Is it something as simple as, my monitor and graphics card aren't compatible, or am I missing something here?

If you use DVI-D or HDMI to VGA you need an active adapter.

If you installed a GPU connect it to that, not onboard video

As you have a z370 mobo I take it that this is a new build and is booting for the first time. Make sure you have disabled the CPU gfx in the BIOS.
