why spend $300 on a <mod edit> card if you can get a GTX 970 980 for the same price

Solution
Exactly. Because there is NO supply for the 400 and 500, they are getting rarer and harder to find, while people still buy them, be it because of budget issues or otherwise, thus, their price increases. Simple. As to the 780 Ti thing, if it had kept its price, it would be more affordable than the 980. That's why Nvidia discontinued it, since it would be far too good of an opponent of the 980. The 980 isn't that much better, it's more energy efficient, but in terms of power the 780 Ti does extremely well too.

ah abusing the ignorance of americans

Supply and demand. While there's very little demand for 400/500 series, the supply is practically non-existent. For reference you can check the 780 Ti - it's now obsolete, but it's price is raising because it is no longer in production while people still use it.

do you know how supply and demand works?
if there is a demand for it the price will go up
the 400 and 500 are discontinued leaving the graphic card at a stopped growth

if there is too much of something that is called inflation and the item will be cost less
since so many vendors has it for sale

isnt the 980 better than the 780ti people should stop buying 780ti and buy the 980
