Why LCD?

It seems everyone is so fascinated with going LCD... I keep reading about problems with ghosting, bad pixels, poor contrast, blurry image at non-native resolutions, etc.

Other than smaller size, what does LCD offer?

have you ever tried to hold a 19 inch CRT in your arms?
how about fit a 19 inch CRT with box in a Corolla or maybe
Neon? And how about try to place a 19 inch CRT on the desk
that provided in the dorm room for you to so call "study"?

so why not LCD?

yea, it's heavy, but it's not like i can't handle it. i am not a big guy either at 5'7" 150lbs

never tried it with a box, but my 17" fits just fine in the front or back seats of my ford escort zx2..i even strap it in with a seatbelt

my 17" worked just fine during my 2 years of dorm life...and it seems a lot of people here are buying LCD's for home use. also consider that i am a gamer and was very picky about setup/placement. a simple computer desk below my loft/bed worked great

Is there anything else besides size that LCD's offer? In other words, if size is not an issue, why else go LCD?


Also, I can't imagine that the majority of us here don't have the room for a CRT in our homes. Especially after considering we have been using them for years.

If you have space issues, you are weak and can't carry heavy items, or have a small car( if you unpack a CRT, it will fit in a small car}, then LCDs are better. Otherwise I would rather have a CRT. When LCDs are equal with CRTs in performance, price and high res graphics, then I will get a LCD. I have a big desk! Check out this article, an inferior product might take over the monitor business. I maybe forced to buy a LCD in the near future. Advantages for LCD, smaller, less heat and less power use.

Thanks for the article link. It helps to support my opinion that CRT's are still superior for the vast majority of our uses.

No problem, a little education is good for people. Some people try to justify a purchase and say this product is the best! Don't get me wrong LCD fanboys, I would love to have a LCD to play games and watch movies if they would meet the price/preformance/visual qualities of a CRT.

Now if you are just doing word processing, surfing the web and playing Minesweeper, then a LCD is fine. Also, once out of the box I fit a 21" monitor in a small car, then of course their is delivery.

Other thing about transporting monitors is lcd's seem to be more fragile- it has been more than one occasion that I have punched the front of my monitor and it has been fine (try that with an lcd :tongue: ). There have been also concerns w/ radiation caused by crts vs. lcds- all myths in the damage they do, and of course the age old question of which is better for the eyes. I used to think lcd was better- even tried 2 different ones- but soon found this to be wrong IN MY CASE (it varies for people). 17" FE791SB @ 116Hz, 1024x768 causes little to no eyestrain, even when I sit in front of it for the entire day programming or doing other things. Perhaps I'll get a 20"+ LCD in the future, but as members already stated, iff it matches or excels crt in image quality. There are some new techs from nec/mitsubishi that I am hopeful will come to the market, but we never know.

Hilbert space is a big place.
